Lend Lease’s £1.5bn regeneration of Elephant & Castle, SE1, has been selected to pilot a climate change initiative launched today by former US president Bill Clinton.
The Southwark site - alongside the London Development Agency-owned Albert Basin site in the Royal Docks and 14 other international urban regeneration schemes - will be founding projects for the Climate Positive Development Programme.
The program, which was launched by Clinton today at the C40 summit in the South Korean capital of Seoul, will demonstrate how cities can "grow in ways that are climate positive".
It requires property developers and local governments to work in partnership to reduce the net greenhouse gas emissions of the projects to below zero.
The partners will implement economically viable innovations in buildings to generate clean energy, control waste management, water management and transportation and outdoor lighting systems.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: "It is superb news for London that two of the capital's most innovative low-carbon redevelopments have been selected by Bill Clinton's Climate Initiative to be showcased on a world stage.
Leader of Southwark council, councillor Nick Stanton, said he was delighted that the council's approach to sustainability in regeneration had been recognised.
"Southwark council is regenerating some of the most deprived parts of the UK," he said.
"We are doing it in a pioneering way that means more homes, but no more carbon emissions.
Dan Labbad, Lend Lease Europe chief executive, said "Elephant & Castle is one of the most significant regeneration schemes in Europe and one which Lend Lease is proud to be part of in collaboration with Southwark council and the Clinton Climate Initiative.
"Not only is it a unique opportunity to create a lasting legacy for London, it also presents us with the chance to set a new benchmark for sustainable development globally and positively influence how the built environment of the future impacts in climate change."
