Berkeley marks start of work on £1bn Kidbrooke regeneration scheme

Berkeley Homes’ £1bn regeneration of the Ferrier Estate in Kidbrooke, south-east London, finally got underway today with a launch event to mark the occasion.

The scheme, which will demolish the existing estate and replace it with 4,000 new homes, was kickstarted with an initial £30m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The 20-year project, being built with Southern Housing Group, will also include new schools, a 30,000 sq ft commercial hub, sports and leisure pitches, healthcare facilities and a transport interchange.

Tony Pidgley, chairman of Berkeley, said: “Urban regeneration is at the heart of Berkeley’s business and it is in communities such as Kidbrooke that we can really make a difference.

"This is an exciting scheme that will bring much-needed improvements to housing and amenities for the local community and we are pleased to be pushing ahead with it."

Construction on the first phase of 220 homes for private sale and 229 affordable will begin from today, with the first residents expected to move in next year.

Consultations are ongoing over the second phase.
