A tale of two high streets as polarisation grips retail

Britain’s high street has had a difficult year, with 1,267 retail store closures, and counting.

Among them are Toys R Us and Maplin, which both went bust earlier this year, while a number of chains, such as Carpetright, Mothercare and House of Fraser, have announced store closures to cut costs and stave off insolvency.

Earlier this month retail tycoon Mike Ashley told MPs that the country’s high street was “dying” and that 20% of it was not salvageable, 60% was in critical condition, while the top 20% of stores located in upmarket areas such as Oxford Street and Bond Street were not relevant.
