The prime minister is determined for the UK to become a “scientific superpower”, telling every part of the government to “get behind the mission”.
Rishi Sunak is expected to announce a £250m fund for artificial intelligence this week, a modest boost to research spending, which stands at about £9bn a year. It is part of a broader readjustment of policy after the creation last month of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
The plans include building an ultra-powerful “exascale” supercomputer, capable of a billion operations per second.
