Barclay told to ‘find a way’ to pay £100m divorce bill

Property and publishing tycoon Sir Frederick Barclay has avoided jail, but has been told to “find a way” to pay his £100m divorce bill.

Judge Sir Jonathan Cohen said he would postpone sentencing for three months after learning the 87-year-old had paid £245,000 in owed legal costs and maintenance after borrowing the money.

Barclay’s legal team has said he cannot pay the full divorce bill because his assets were illiquid and controlled by his nephews.

Barclay, with his late twin brother, David, built an empire spanning property, hotels and the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Cohen warned Barclay that “the debt will not go away”, adding: “It should be a matter of shame for Sir Frederick and his nephews that Lady Barclay should be left with next to nothing by way of financial resources for the future.”
