Bath’s Debenhams lined up for mixed-use office scheme

Debenhams’ 120,000 sq ft department store in a Bath shopping centre could potentially become a mixed-use office scheme, with its landlords appointing agents to oversee a prospective revamp.

British Land, which jointly owns the SouthGate shopping centre alongside Aviva Investors, has appointed Cushman & Wakefield as the sole office agent to oversee the store’s repurposing.

C&W’s Bristol team is overseeing an architect tendering process. The aim is to incorporate office space and “artisan” retail, with scope for a gym and rooftop bar or restaurant.

It is understood that Debenhams had signed a flexible lease on the store, which allows the landlord to take control of the property from March 2021.

C&W is also the joint asset manager and letting agent for the shopping centre, alongside Savills.
