Bellway fined £100,000 for dumping contaminated soil

Bellway Homes has been ordered to pay £100,000 after dumping contaminated soil onto a development site in Northumberland.

The enforcement undertaking by the Environment Agency has ordered that the housebuilder pay £50,000 to Northumberland Wildlife Trust, £30,000 to Wear Rivers Trust and £20,000 to Tyne Rivers Trust.

It had been found guilty of dumping 2,688 cubic metres of waste soil – containing wood, metal, wire cables, rubber, plastic and vehicle tyres – at its St Mary’s Park site near Stannington in 2017.

The contaminated soil had been scooped from one of its other developments, the nearby Five Mile Park.

Bellway Homes had argued that its consultants had told the firm it was allowed to import the soil without any authorisation. The Environment Agency said this was simply “not correct”.
