The Conservative Party will lose the next election if it scraps targets to build more homes, three former housing ministers have warned.
Sajid Javid, Simon Clarke and Brandon Lewis issued the warning as the number of rebels seeking to remove the government’s target of building 300,000 new homes a year grew to 56 MPs. The rebels, spearheaded by the former environment secretary Theresa Villiers, argue the government’s targets are excessive and undermine local councils.
Writing in The Sunday Times (£), Javid said he was “dismayed” to see more than 50 Tory MPs put their names to “damaging” amendments to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill.
