Capco and St Christopher’s Place owner win first EPRA gold eco award

Capital & Counties and BMO Commercial Property Trust have won a gold European Public Real Estate Sustainability Award for the first time.

The awards are based on a review of public disclosure of sustainability performance for the year ended 30 June 2019. A total of 158 companies were assessed in the 2019 Awards, including 139 EPRA members. UK firms have the highest representation of any country in the organisation, with a total of 51 members.

In total, 23 UK companies were awarded prizes, compared to 20 last year. This included 18 gold prizes (compared to 14 last year), two silver and three bronze.

Capco took home gold in the 2019 ranking after winning silver last year and in 2017. BMO, the owner of St Christopher’s Place, the mixed-use estate in London W1, collected gold after no prior record of winning the prize at any level.

Picton Property, which converted to a REIT last year, and RDI REIT, also obtained gold prizes for the first time.

Other UK gold winners included intu, British Land, SEGRO and Shaftesbury

A panel of JLL sustainability reporting experts scored the EPRA members and Index constituents on various factors. These included performance measures relating to energy, green-house gas emissions, water, waste and building certifications, as well as social and governance indicators.

Overall the number of European listed property companies reporting sustainability data increased by 30% in 2019.

Dominique Moerenhout, EPRA chief executive, said: “Today more than 90% of EPRA-listed real estate members have signed up to our sustainability Best Practices Recommendations (sBPR), which truly set the industry standard for ESG data disclosure. The number of award winners has more than doubled since the launch of the EPRA sBPR, but there is still work to do.”
