Castleforge’s plans to revamp 1 Golden Lane, EC1, have been approved by the City of London Corporation.
The Grade II listed building, which lies between the Golden Lane Estate the Barbican Centre, will be raised in height and extended from 107,000 sq ft to 167,000 sq ft, including new community space and roof terraces.
The Hawkins\Brown-designed scheme was approved by the committee by 14 votes to 12 after a two-and-a-half-hour debate. Objections had been raised by the local community about the increased height.
The striking late Victorian red-brick building dates back to the 1890s, when it was built as the home of City of London charity the Cripplegate Institute.
It was bought by Castleforge last October from Singapore’s Hoi Hup Realty for £75m, after UBS ended its tenancy.
