Clifford Chance face huge claim in China

City law firm Clifford Chance is being sued for £54m over advice regarding the construction of a power station in China.

It is claimed that eleven partners of the firm’s Hong Kong office were negligent in the drafting of a contract for the building and maintenance of the Shajiao C station in Guangdong province.

Southern Energy (Shajiao “C”) Ltd, of Hong Kong; Consolidated Electric Power Asia Ltd, of Bermuda; Guangdong Province Shajiao (Plant C) Power Generation Corporation, and Guangdong Guanghope Power Co Ltd, both of Guangzhou; and Stenus Ltd, of Jersey, have issued a claim in the High Court.

They are suing Timothy Soutar, Roger Best, David Parry-Jones, James Baird, Christopher Field, Clifford Godfrey, John Mortlock, John Holmes, Huw Jenkins, Nigel Bassett and Hugh Piggott, trading as Clifford Chance, of Jardine House, 1 Connaught Place, Hong Kong.

The companies and the partners have agreed that the High Court shall have exclusive jurisdiction to hear the case.

The claim was issued by Masons on 15 October 1999.

Clifford Chance refused to comment.
