Climbers step up for Gherkin challenge

More than 1,000 people stepped up to the challenge of climbing the 1,037 steps of the Gherkin last weekend as part of an Evans Randall-led sponsored tower climb.

Participants were sponsored to climb the 38-storey 30 St Mary Axe, EC3, gaining panoramic views from the iconic London landmark when they reached the top.

The event was masterminded by Kent Gardner and Paul Kendrick of Evans Randall, which half-owns the Gherkin. It raised more than £275,000 for the Christchurch Earthquake appeal.

Danny Bent achieved the fastest time of 4min 56sec; fastest female was Gillian Banks at 5:46; and fastest team was Stairway to Heaven at 6:05. To donate, visit www.stepup4christchurch.com
