EG Awards: Could you be one of this year’s big winners?

The 17th annual EG Awards ceremony takes place at the Grosvenor House hotel this evening and the team at EG can’t wait to see you all there.

THE SHORTLIST

UK Adviser Award

This category is for all UK real estate advisory businesses that have at least eight administrative offices around the UK and an annual turnover in excess of £40m. Judges were looking for businesses that were able to prove they had been market leaders during the period under review and were able to adapt to the challenges brought about by the pandemic to ensure that their business remained successful.

This year, the EG Awards entrants demonstrated how nimbly the industry has adapted and innovated to tackle the immediate challenges and long-term change in environment the sector has and is facing

Global Adviser Award

This category was open to all real estate advisers that had fee-earning subsidiaries on at least three continents. This year in particular, judges were looking for evidence of how businesses had learned lessons from each of their geographies to better understand, and therefore react to, the global coronavirus pandemic.

UK Company Award

Any UK business with a turnover of more than £40m operating in the real estate sphere was able to enter this category. Judges were looking for excellence of service throughout the pandemic, strong leadership and a business that has been able to adapt to the challenges of the year under review.

Global Company Award

This category is open to businesses operating in the real estate sphere that have a footprint in the UK and beyond. Judges rewarded companies that could prove they were market leaders across numerous geographies throughout the period under review and that had adapted to the challenges brought about by the pandemic. Robust financial performance and clear indicators of success were vital to being shortlisted.

While the past 15 months have been difficult for everyone on many different levels, it was fantastic to see how the real estate industry
has responded and driven innovation, without this being at the expense of the so-important ESG and D&I agendas

William Beardmore-Gray, head of London offices and global head of occupier services and commercial agency, Knight Frank

Legal Team Award

This category seeks to celebrate real estate legal teams working in planning, transactions, investment, financing, development and construction, as well as in environment and regeneration. Judges were looking for firms that could demonstrate outstanding advice on major transformative deals; those that have responded proactively to the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic, leading the way in providing a valuable service to landlords and tenants dealing with the consequences, including lease renegotiations and insolvencies; and those that could demonstrate a commitment to championing core values such as diversity, inclusivity and sustainability in their working practices.

BTR Specialist Award

No longer burgeoning, BTR is a hot and increasingly established sector of the real estate market. Judges were looking for developers, investors, operators and managers of purpose-built rented residential assets that could demonstrate clear evidence of the success of investment and operational strategies.

Industrial & Logistics Specialist Award

Shortlisted entrants to this category were able to tell a strong story as to why and how their business had succeeded during the year under review, with evidence of key achievements and execution of strategy. In a year when logistics has never been hotter, judges have selected only the very best in the sector.

Alternatives Specialist Award

This award was open to advisers (businesses and teams) and property companies operating in the alternatives sector, including those active in the hotel, healthcare, student, retirement and data centre sectors. Judges were looking for strong financial performance, along with the demonstration of key indicators of success and provision of information on transformational deals or instructions during the review period.

Best Workspace Award

In a year when workplaces have shifted from the office to the home, judges were keen to see evidence of how office space has been adapted to meet the needs of a largely absent workforce. They were also looking for examples of how owners or operators had enabled workers to continue to operate as if they were in the office.

Rising Star Award

One of EG’s most popular awards, the Rising Star category seeks to celebrate the very best of young talent in the sector. Judges were looking for those under the age of 35 who are making a significant impact on the industry.

Sustainability Award

The green agenda has been strengthened during the pandemic, with sustainability (and ESG as a whole) becoming a key topic in boardrooms across the globe. Judges faced tough decisions in this category, looking for firms that could provide quantitative examples of improvements being taken to improve sustainability today, not just by 2050.

Social Impact Award

The award that shows how real estate makes a difference. Judges worked hard on this category to shortlist businesses that were using their position and status to deliver a positive impact on society. Pioneering ideas and approaches that can be replicated and scaled to increase social impact were particularly powerful in judges’ deliberations.

Employer Award

Putting people first during the pandemic was something we heard numerous times from businesses all around the world. And real estate did its bit to really showcase that property is a people business. Judges for this category were keen to celebrate businesses that got the basics right, but also went the extra mile for their staff. Evidence of strong leadership, innovation and commitment to employee development was vital in shortlisting discussions, as was the championing of core values such as diversity, inclusivity and sustainability in working practices.

Future of Real Estate Award

This category is for those creating a solid future for the success of the real estate sector. Judges looked for clear evidence of businesses or individuals that are utilising new technologies, new methods or new ways of thinking or approaching business to deliver a real estate proposition for the future.

Public/Private Partnership Award

A new award for 2021 to celebrate partnerships between the public and private sectors. Judges were particularly keen to shortlist partnerships that showed real evidence of success and innovative solutions.

In this most difficult of years, it was reassuring to see so many high-quality entries for the EG Awards that mixed financial performance with a community focus (centred around Covid) and an emphasis on ESG and sustainability

City of the Year Award

Another new award for 2021 that celebrates the UK’s cities. Judges wanted to see clear evidence of successful implementation of measures to create liveable and successful cities and examples of solutions that have enabled the city not just to survive but to thrive, creating homes to allow all people to live safely and happily, an economy that allows businesses to grow and develop and spaces that allow the planet to thrive.

The Renewal Award

This is EG’s special award for 2021 seeking to celebrate those businesses that had to pivot, reinvent or reimagine their businesses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Judges were especially keen to showcase those firms that could demonstrate how changes have renewed and refreshed their business, secured income or new investment, or enabled the business to continue to develop.

Despite one of the quietest years in investment in the capital for some time, deals continue to get done. Judges were looking for evidence of innovation and high returns this year through investment, occupier or corporate deals.

  • Rothschild & Co for CapCo’s acquisition of a 26.3% stake in Shaftesbury for £436m
  • Tritax Big Box and Bericote Properties for the 2.3m sq ft Powerhouse development in Dartford, prelet to Amazon on a 20-year term

Regional Deal Award

Judges in this category were keen to celebrate the very best deal activity across the UK. High returns, innovative solutions for transacting in a year of lockdown and evidence of how a deal may aid the UK in its levelling-up agenda all helped guide judges to select this year’s Regional Deal Award shortlist.

  • Colliers for relocating Deloitte from Spinningfields to WeWork’s Hanover Building in Manchester
  • Grainger for completing £200m of regional investment in Birmingham, Bristol and Nottingham
  • Greystar for the £291m purchase of five PBSA assets in Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow and London
  • Heylo’s Home Reach & Vistry’s partnership to deliver 1,000 shared-ownership homes across England
  • Muse Developments’ £130m forward funding deal with Pension Insurance Corporation for its New Victoria scheme in Manchester
  • Wrenbridge Land & Fiera Real Estate for the sale of Hawkers Yard, Ruislip, to Mileway
  • Wrenbridge Land for its leasing of the 125,000 sq ft Arc in North Aylesford, Kent

THE ON-THE NIGHT SURPRISES

The winners of EG’s Tech Awards – to be announced on 14 September – will automatically be shorted for the Tech Award at the EG Awards, so make sure that you tune into our global broadcast in a couple of months’ time to find out if you have made the cut.

EG will also announce the winner of our Outstanding Individual Award on 28 October. This award will celebrate an individual who has created amazing places, been involved in some of the most transformative deals or created real change across the industry. It could recognise a lifetime of work or an individual who has burst on to the scene but has already made a huge impact.
