Fierce competition boosts sale price of 1920s school building

A 1920s former school building in Kent was one of the highlights at Clive Emson's series of July auctions across southern England in which the auctioneer raised £19m, reflecting an overall success rate of 70%.

Developers competed to buy the St Christopher's Independent Day School in Canterbury (pictured), which closed last year after nearly 100 years, driving the price to £850,000 – up from a guide price of £700,000.

The school was one of 125 lots sold at a series of five auctions which took place between 22-26 July in Essex, Kent, Surrey, the West Country and
