Full steam ahead for HS2 college

Birmingham College for High Speed Rail HS2Birmingham City Council and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership have won consent for the city’s £22m National College for High Speed Rail.

Planners have given the green light for the 61,350 sq ft college, to be located on the former Birmingham Science Park site close to Dartmouth Middleway and Lister Street.

The college has been designed by Bond Bryan Architects and developed with the National College for High Speed Rail alongside Doncaster Metropolitan Borough council and HS2 Ltd.

The decision follows approval for the college’s sister site, in Doncaster, last month.

The two colleges will train the workforce required to build HS2 and other future infrastructure projects.

John Clancy, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “I’m keen to ensure that HS2 becomes part of the solution in relation to our challenges with jobs and skills in Birmingham.”

Business secretary and Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid added: “The National College for High Speed Rail will make Birmingham a hub of high-quality skills that the UK rail industry needs for years to come.”

Work will start on site in April, with practical completion due in September 2017.
