Goodman to develop Harwell nuclear research site

Australian property trust Goodman has been chosen by the UK Atomic Energy Authority to develop a £1bn science campus at Harwell in Oxfordshire.

The plans, first mooted by government in the March 2006 budget, will see the UK’s first civil nuclear research site redeveloped to include a further 1m sq ft of laboratories, hi-tech warehouses, offices and related amenities, along with hotels and housing.

The Harwell site, which holds the 740-acre research campus, has already been developed as a science park and houses 100 technology-based organisations.

Under the terms of the agreement, UK Atomic Energy Authority will provide land at Harwell for development and an existing business base and the Science and Technology Facilities Council will contribute involvement in major public sector science programmes.

Goodman, as a 50:50 joint venture partner with the government agencies, will offer “market access to global businesses and expertise in long-term property ownership, development and management, as well as providing working capital”.

Jim Johnston, managing director of UK business parks at Goodman, said: “Goodman is a leader in the development and management of business and science space, and has an excellent track record of fostering collaboration between businesses, research organisations and universities.

“We are excited about helping Harwell Science and Innovation Campus become an open and interactive community, with a global reputation for science and innovation excellence.”

Goodman beat competition from Quantum, the joint venture set up by Morley and Quintain to invest in science parks.
