Government nuclear body to occupy Harwell’s Dexter Building

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has prelet the Dexter Building at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus near Didcot, Oxfordshire.

NDA’s new home will span 45,000 sq ft. Designed by ADP Architecture, the building will comprise offices and plant facilities, featuring “passive zones” around flexible workstations, and “active zones” containing kitchenettes and breakout areas.

Last month, Brookfield spin-off ARC secured permission to add the Dexter Building to the 2.2-acre site  after the plans were lodged with the local council in August last year. ARC will also deliver a car park with 175 spaces and cycle storage for 37 bikes.

The scheme is set to become Harwell’s first to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification. It is expected to be fully electric, and will use low and zero-carbon technologies, including energy efficient air source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels.

The Dexter building is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2024.

Monika Zemla, director of leasing and business development at Harwell, said: “We’re delighted to have secured planning for the Dexter development.

“Dexter will be occupied by NDA, whose crucial work will pave the way for the realisation of our masterplan vision and will enable further expansion of our globally renowned science community.”

NDA was created through the Energy Act 2004 and is tasked with safely decommissioning the UK’s new power plants and research laboratories.
