Javid favourite for PM, according to EG poll

Home secretary Sajid Javid has emerged as the favourite to succeed Theresa May as prime minister, according to a Twitter poll of EG readers.

Some 30% said Javid would be the best contender for prime minister out of a four-strong line-up that also included former London mayor Boris Johnson, housing minister Kit Malthouse and environment secretary Michael Gove.

Javid is known for pledging to get the UK building up to 300,000 new homes a year. In addition, he launched a programme of leasehold and commonhold reform, including a ban on leaseholds for almost all new-build houses to crack down on unfair and abusive practices in the system.

He was closely followed in the EG poll by Gove, who took 27% of the votes, and Malthouse with 25%. Johnson came in last with 18%.

May will resign on 7 June. However, she will remain as interim prime minister until the leadership contest has been decided.
