Leeds council urges development of ‘sustainable’ schemes

Leeds council’s latest set of planning guidelines urge developers to minimise the environmental impact of new developments and improve their long-term sustainability.

The guidelines – entitled The Sustainable Development Design Guide – reflect the council’s belief that the layout of a development is critical in determining its energy efficiency and environmental impact.

The council will base planning and development control decisions on these guidelines . The new rules cover issues such as movement and transport, biodiversity, protecting water resources, energy efficiency, sustainable building materials, as well as local historic, cultural and social factors.

“The guide reflects Leeds City Council’s commitment to encouraging high standards of design which take into account environmental and social objectives,” said Councillor Keith Wakefield, Chair of Development Services Group Committee. “The purpose of the guide is to reduce the environmental impact of development proposals.”
