Leeds council today formally adopted the Leeds Unitary Development Plan (UDP), following a lengthy process that began in 1989.
The UDP replaces all earlier development plans for the Leeds district as well as the West Yorkshire Structure plan. It will form the basis for decisions on land use in the area, identifying the scale and location of land intended for housing and employment, overseeing the expansion of the city centre, and establishing green belt boundaries.
The UDP looks ahead as far as 2006, but preliminary work is already underway on the UDP Review which takes the plan forward to 2016.
Plans to draw up the UDP began 12 years ago. A major public consultation exercise was undertaken in 1992 on an early version and following public comment a Revised Draft UDP was placed on deposit in June 1993.
