Ministers vow to ease planning and power issues for data centres

The government is preparing to to step in to help the development of the UK’s data centre network, after complaints that planning and power issues were holding back the sector.

Setting out her agenda for the year ahead, technology secretary Michelle Donelan will say today that she is working closely with her counterparts in the energy and communities departments to address the issue.

TechUK, an industry lobby group, has been calling for reforms in response to the increasing digitisation of the economy. Last year, in a letter to Ofgem, the energy regulator, it said “data centres are not being built” and that “getting access to power has held back some key digital infrastructure projects”.
