More public figures have joined a campaign to halt Sellar and Network Rail’s planned redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station.
In a letter published in The Times broadcaster Stephen Fry and artist Tracey Emin have added their names to a growing list pulled together by the Victorian Society.
Other signatories include three former presidents of the Royal Institute of British Architects and representatives of heritage organisations.
In a letter to The Times, they wrote: “To plonk 15 storeys of insensitively designed tower directly on top of the grade II* former Great Eastern Hotel… is grossly opportunistic and wrong… and sets a dangerous precedent.”
Under the £1.5bn plan, which includes £450m of station upgrades, two new high rise buildings will be cantilevered above the Victorian buildings, while the concourse would be rebuilt and extended.
The full plans, however, have yet to be published.
