A Russian consortium’s plans for a rocket-inspired mixed-use tower in Southwark
are about to be launched.

Southwark Square has submitted plans for a Studio 44-designed development inspired by the Vostok 1 rocket that carried Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961.

The plans for 55 Southwark Street, SE1 comprise a 28-storey residential tower (with flat numbers to be determined), 350-seat theatre and spaceship-themed bar.

The Menier Chocolate Factory Group is lined up as a likely operator for much of the project. The applicant wants to create a “landmark beacon for the arts”.

Plans were mooted two years ago.
