St Martins gives market traders more time to leave Hays Galleria

St Martins has said that it will give market traders at Hays Galleria until the end of September to find alternative sites after it told them to vacate the site.

Earlier this month the six long-standing market traders at the London Bridge shopping arcade between Tooley Steet and the Thames were told to leave without explanation and given until 30 June to quit the Galleria.

Following a public outcry however St Martins has given the traders until 30 September to move.

In a statement St Martins said “As landlords of the development, St Martins has permitted six independent market stalls to trade on the site for a number of years.

“As part of a wider strategy to improve and refresh the environment, St Martins felt the time was right for a change and the removal of the barrows is being considered as a part of this process.

“St Martins gave the traders a three month notice period to allow them time to find an alternative pitch. However, St Martins has considered the views of all parties involved and this period has now been extended to the end of September, a total notice of six months.

“This will allow the traders to make the most of the busy summer months. During this time St Martins will continue to review the longer term strategy for the Galleria and may consider alternative options for the barrow traders,” she said.
