Cardiff council’s £700m Sports Village scheme has been kickstarted by the award of a £17m site clearance contract to Taylor Woodrow.
Taylor Woodrow will also develop a 450-flat scheme called Victoria Wharf as part of the Sports Village, under its Bryant Homes brand.
The contract also includes decontamination work and construction of a bay walkway fronting the 81.5-acre (33ha) site and foundation work for a swimming pool.
The site clearance will allow developer Bride Hall to press ahead with plans for a 290,000 sq ft (26,941 sq m) retail/leisure development as part of the Sports Village, on 24 acres (9.7ha) that it has agreed to buy from the council, subject to detailed planning permission.
Bride Hall plans 240,000 sq ft (23,300 sq m) of food and non-food retail with 50,000 sq ft (4,650 sq m) of leisure.
Bride Hall has been in talks with Waitrose – which is known to want a 60,000 sq ft (5,574 sq m) store in south Wales – and Next.
Cardiff council leader Russell Goodway said, “This will be the council’s most important urban regeneration project of the next decade.
“Taking the project forward has not been without its difficulties. The plans have taken more than six years to develop.
