Turn ‘ugly old supermarkets’ into communities, says commission

Out-of-town retail parks and supermarkets should be turned into developments for communities, a government commission has advised. The Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission said in its interim report that town halls should encourage redevelopment of these places to deliver homes, shops and businesses. Nicholas Boys Smith, interim chairman of the commission, said: “Redeveloping abandoned out-of-town retail parks and ugly old supermarkets would deliver something much more beautiful in the form of thriving new communities where people can raise a family, work or settle down."
