Wigan rugby league club is facing a legal suit over plans to sell its Central Park stadium to Tesco for £11.7m.
David Whelan, owner of Wigan Athletic football club and chairman of JJB Sports, said he will challenge the deal in the courts. Under the sale to Tesco, the rugby club would stay at Central Park for three years before moving to share a new stadium with Bolton Wanderers football club.
Mr Whelan wants to buy the ground for £4m and invest a further £17.5m in modernising the stadium. He claims the support of the majority of the club’s shareholders but not the board.
