Yorkshire’s tourist towns of Scarborough and Whitby will be among the first in England to double council tax bills on second homes.
Councillors voted to introduce the “ground-breaking” 100% premium to tackle a housing crisis blamed on booking websites such as Airbnb.
The increase will be added to council tax bills from April 2024 if parliament passes levelling-up legislation to give local authorities additional powers.
North Yorkshire has the highest concentration of second homes in England.
